A cloud-based toolset for carbon neutral planning

SmartEPS™ is ECS’s cloud-based energy and carbon transition planning solution. It establishes your current energy and greenhouse gas emissions profile, forecasts future emissions and evaluates the impact of proposed improvement projects, so you can plan a credible pathway towards carbon neutrality.

SmartOSR™ identifies what can be improved in your operation and the potential value. SmartEPS™ models how those improvement initiatives contribute to future energy and carbon reduction targets under different scenarios. Together, they support investment decisions, project prioritisation and long-term sustainability planning.

By modelling different energy and carbon reduction scenarios, SmartEPS™ shows how planned interventions could reduce future emissions and the associated carbon-related costs. Carbon pricing and tax assumptions can be included in financial scenario assessments where they form part of the agreed scope. SmartEPS™ supports strategic decision-making and carbon tax exposure management; it does not replace formal tax calculation, reporting or compliance processes.

SmartEPS™ primarily supports Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions management: direct emissions from fuel consumption and indirect emissions from purchased electricity and energy. Scope 3 emissions, such as those from suppliers, contractors and transportation, can be included in the broader assessment where relevant value-chain data is available and within the agreed scope.

SmartEPS™ uses historical energy consumption, operational activity and emissions information. Typical inputs include electricity and fuel consumption, production forecasts, operating plans, existing emissions inventories, emission factors, energy costs and planned improvement projects. For longer-term modelling, life-of-mine or business growth plans, renewable energy strategies, capital assumptions and carbon reduction targets also help. ECS uses this to set a baseline, build business-as-usual projections and evaluate alternative scenarios. The timeline depends on the complexity of the operation, data availability and the level of analysis, and delivery milestones are agreed during scoping.

SmartEPS™ can support the preparation of energy and greenhouse gas information aligned with the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064-1, CDP and the JSE Sustainability and Climate Disclosure Guidance. It provides energy and carbon inventories, emissions forecasts, scenario analysis and progress tracking to inform corporate sustainability reporting. Formal reporting, verification and assurance remain separate activities where required.
